What to Avoid After Filler

The aftercare sheet has no dates on it, which is why it stops being followed somewhere around Wednesday.

So here it is as a countdown instead. Every restriction below has an expiry attached, and knowing when something ends is what makes people keep to it while it's still running. Practice instructions vary and yours take precedence over anything here, but this is the ordinary shape of it.

The first six hours

Stay upright. No lying flat, no face-down naps on the train home, no massage table.

Leave the area completely alone. No pressing, no checking with a fingertip, no "just seeing whether it feels even." It doesn't feel even yet, and pressing is the single most effective way to move product that hasn't settled anywhere.

Keep makeup off the entry points. The needle or cannula left small openings and they need a few hours to close before anything gets applied over them.

Expect the area to look wrong. Swelling arrives quickly and asymmetrically, and the version of your face in the mirror tonight is not connected to the version you'll have in a fortnight.

Until this time tomorrow

No alcohol. It widens vessels and dehydrates you, and both make tomorrow's swelling and bruising worse than they had to be.

No exercise beyond an ordinary walk. Raised blood pressure pushes more fluid into tissue that's already inflamed. Strolling the waterfront, fine. Stopping at the gym before you get home is what this restriction exists to prevent.

No heat. Hot showers with your face in the spray, saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga, and standing over a stove in a small kitchen all count. Heat does the same thing exertion does by a different route.

Sleep on your back tonight, propped up a little if you can stand it. This one matters more than it sounds, because six hours of steady pressure from a pillow is exactly the sort of force the gel hasn't set against yet.

Through day two and day three

The pressure rule is still running and it's the one people drop first, because it's invisible and constant. A phone wedged against a cheek. A hand under the jaw on a bus. A child's head. Tight goggles or a strap across the treated area. Resting your chin in your palm at a desk, which is the one nobody notices themselves doing.

Exercise usually resumes somewhere around forty-eight hours, though ask, because it depends where you were treated and how much went in.

Swelling generally peaks in here rather than on the day, which catches people out. Worse on day two than day one is ordinary. Worse on day four than day three is not.

Bruising, if it's going to appear, has appeared by now. Arnica and concealer are both fine. Ice only if the practice told you to, and never a hard press.

Through the first week

Serious heat stays off for most of it. A week is the usual guidance for saunas and steam.

Dental work gets postponed if the filler went anywhere near your mouth, because of the stretching and the pressure rather than the dentistry itself. That said, if something dental is genuinely urgent, it outranks this completely. Keep the appointment and tell the dentist there's filler in the area and roughly where.

Facials, microdermabrasion, peels and any other treatment over the same area wait. Ask about the specific gap; it's commonly a couple of weeks.

Pools, hot tubs and open water are best left until the entry points have properly closed, which is a matter of days rather than hours.

Until day fourteen

Don't judge it. That's the restriction with the longest run and the one most often broken.

Swelling resolves across a fortnight, not a weekend. Small firm areas you can feel but not see are common early and usually soften. A degree of unevenness at day four frequently evens out on its own. People who book a correction in week one are almost always correcting something that was going to resolve.

Day fourteen is when the result is settled enough to assess and when any genuine adjustment gets made. Book that visit at the same time as the treatment, while your calendar is already open.

What has no expiry date

Two things run indefinitely.

Tell any future practitioner that you've had filler and where. This includes other injectors, dentists and anyone planning imaging of your face. It stays relevant long after it stops being visible.

And keep the practice's after-hours number somewhere you can find it at nine in the evening rather than somewhere you'd have to search for.

The short list that means call now

Most of what happens afterwards is ordinary. This list is not, and it's time-sensitive.

Skin over the treated area turning white, grey, dusky or mottled. Pain that keeps climbing rather than easing. Anything at all happening to your eyesight. Heat and redness travelling outward from the site, particularly alongside a temperature.

Rare, all of it, and also the category where a few hours genuinely count. That's the argument for writing the number down before the appointment rather than hunting for it afterwards.

Planning the week around all of this

Put the treatment where a week of possible bruising costs you least. Look at what's actually in your calendar before you pick the date, because a local week fills faster than people account for and the outdoor commitments are the ones that clash worst. Listings at The Hoboken Girl - Events, News, Restaurants, Lifestyle cover most of it, business events get posted by Hoboken Chamber of Commerce - Hudson County Chamber of Commerce if your work obliges you to attend them, and glancing at 7-Day Forecast 40.74N 74.04W is worth thirty seconds, since a heat wave and fresh filler pair badly. Somewhere quiet to spend the first evening indoors, posted Locations & Hours of Our Branches - Hoboken Public Library will tell you what's still open.

Keep pressure off it, keep heat off it, keep your opinion to yourself until day fourteen, and book that visit in advance.

If you haven't booked yet, the service page for dermal filler in Hoboken is a local place to ask when the day-fourteen check would fall.
